Description

Rolex Day-Date 1803 - 18k Yellow Gold - Pie-Pan Champagne Dial

The Rolex Day-Date made its debut at the Basel Fair in 1956, though its groundbreaking mechanism had been patented some time earlier in 1955. Its defining innovation—the simultaneous display of the date and the full day of the week—set a new standard in horology and placed it among the most prestigious timepieces of its era. This technical feat was paired with Rolex's signature waterproof Oyster case, enhancing both reliability and everyday functionality. Exclusively crafted in 18kt gold or platinum, with stainless steel intentionally excluded, the Day-Date was designed to embody prestige and refinement. From its inception, it was positioned as the flagship of Rolex's catalog, quickly becoming a symbol of success and earning iconic status across diverse spheres of influence. In the "New World", the Day-Date is often nicknamed the "President." While Rolex now reserves this term for its model-exclusive elegant three-link bracelet, early advertisements referred to the watch itself as the "President's watch"—a savvy marketing move that aligned the model with power and elites. This wasn't a mere marketing gimmick; Rolex's claim was backed by reality, as many U.S. Presidents throughout history regularly chose to wear it. Among collectors, Reference 1803 is considered the archetypal vintage Day-Date. Produced from 1959 to 1977, it is one of the most enduring references. The present example, produced in 1968, features the classic "gold on gold" configuration—yellow gold case with a matching champagne dial—and remains in very good condition. It is offered with an exceptionally special set, consisting of the original warranty and COSC attestation, documenting the watch's certification-worthy performance during testing by the Swiss Bureaux in February 1968, prior to its sale in Northern Italy in 1969.
