Description

Rolex Submariner Date 1680 - Black “Pallettoni” Dial

The Rolex Submariner, introduced in 1953, is an icon—its design is among the most recognizable in the world of dive watches. The curves and proportions of this model have become a benchmark, inspiring generations of timepieces across the industry. Launched in 1953 together with the Explorer and Turn-O-Graph, the Submariner began to mature in 1959 with the arrival of reference 5512—a turning point in its evolution. This reference brought with it several of the model's most defining characteristics, such as the increased 40mm case diameter and the introduction of crown guards. In 1962, Rolex expanded the line with the introduction of reference 5513, a non-COSC-certified version of the 5512 aimed at offering a more accessible option. In 1967, Rolex added a third pillar to the Submariner family with the introduction of reference 1680, the first Submariner with a date complication. Early examples of the Rolex Submariner reference 1680—produced until around 1975—featured the distinctive “Red Sub” dial, where the word “Submariner” appeared in red text. These so-called “red writing” dials, such as the one offered in our sale under lot ID 1906023, were eventually phased out in favor of versions with all-white text, like the present example. Produced in 1977, this watch is among the earliest to feature the updated all-white dial printing, reflecting a cleaner, more modern aesthetic that would come to define the Submariner Date moving forward. The introduction of the reference 1680 marked a pivotal evolution for the Geneva-based Maison, as Rolex responded to growing demand for practical yet refined complications by incorporating a date window for the first time into its iconic dive watch. The success of this model—and its many successors—cemented the Submariner Date as a cornerstone of the Rolex lineup. Today, it remains one of the brand’s most sought-after models, admired by both seasoned collectors and first-time buyers alike. Offered in very good overall condition, this particular timepiece now awaits its next chapter with the highest bidder.
