Description

Rolex Submariner No Date 5513 - Meter First Pallettoni Dial - “Ghost” Faded Bezel

The Submariner stands today as one of the most iconic dive watches—and one of the most recognizable timepieces overall. In 1959, the Submariner entered what could be considered its "adulthood" with the introduction of reference 5512, marking the beginning of the second phase. This reference brought with it several of the model's most defining characteristics, such as the increased 40mm case diameter and the introduction of crown guards. Before settling on the now-iconic rounded guards, Rolex tested three more different crown protection designs, ultimately choosing the softer, more balanced shape we know today. The line expanded in 1962 with reference 5513, a non-COSC-certified version of the 5512, offering a more accessible alternative. Both models had remarkable longevity: the 5512 remained in production until 1978, and the 5513 until 1989. This timepiece is the latter reference; although not precision-certified, the 5513 benefits from a cleaner, less cluttered dial thanks to two fewer lines of text at 6 o'clock. Dating to 1968, this Submariner is among the earliest to feature the now-iconic matte dial. It also displays the desirable "meters first" depth rating—a subtle but significant detail that adds rarity and reflects an era when Swiss watches were primarily made for the European market. The dial is very well-preserved, with hands and hour markers that have developed a warm, creamy patina over time. Its vintage appeal is further enhanced by a softly faded "ghost" bezel and the original riveted Oyster bracelet, both of which add to the timepiece's charm. In the world of vintage Submariners, this reference 5513 stands out as a superb transitional example—bridging the era between early gilt dials and later matte "feet first" variants. Preserved in very good condition, it's one not to miss.
