Description
Patek Philippe Nautilus 3800 Steel and Gold - Champagne Dial - PP Warranty
The iconic Patek Philippe Nautilus was introduced in 1976 as the brand's response to the emerging luxury sports watch trend. Designed by Gérald Genta—the same visionary behind the Royal Oak—the Nautilus reference 3700, or "Jumbo," stood out with its porthole-inspired case, softly faceted bezel, and symmetrical ears that defined its unique silhouette.
To broaden its appeal, Patek launched the mid-size reference 3800 in 1981. With a reduced 37.5mm diameter (down from 42mm), the 3800 offered a more wearable option for a wider audience. Thanks to its balanced proportions and wider range of dial and case combinations, it arguably became more commercially successful than the original "Jumbo", quickly rising to be a top seller in the Maison catalogue.
Interestingly, the 3800 was priced even higher than its larger sibling upon release. Enjoying remarkable longevity, it remained in production until 2006, a testament to its enduring popularity. Despite the smaller size, the 3800 retained Genta's original two-piece monobloc case construction, secured by white gold screws in the signature "ears"—a detail later dropped in modern versions.
Another notable evolution was its movement. Unlike the 3700, which used a Jaeger-LeCoultre-based caliber, the 3800 was powered by Patek Philippe's in-house Caliber 335 SC, adding a central seconds hand, enhancing both functionality and prestige.
Sold on Christmas Eve of 1983, this rare two-tone Nautilus 3800 features a striking champagne dial that echoes the gold bezel, crown, and bracelet accents. An early production piece, it is distinguished by its black date wheel—a detail soon phased out. Very well-preserved and accompanied by its original warranty, this watch stands as a remarkable and historically significant piece—part of the early Nautilus legacy that redefined Patek Philippe's trajectory.
