Description

Patek Philippe Ellipse 3848 - 18k Yellow Gold - Blue dial

The golden section, as defined by Euclid in the Elements, is a fascinating mathematical ratio (≈1.618) that appears in nature, art, and geometry, and is often associated with beauty and harmony. Some believe this timeless proportion inspired Jean-Daniel Rubeli, then Patek Philippe’s in-house stylist, in designing the iconic Golden Ellipse. Others favor the account of Jean-Pierre Frattini, a young casemaker at the time, who recalls that Georges Delessert—then head of Patek’s electronics division—was inspired by the elegant curve of an American highway junction seen from an airplane window. Whatever its true origin, the Golden Ellipse debuted in 1968—a challenging period for Swiss watchmaking, with the quartz crisis just around the corner. Despite this, the Ellipse was an immediate success. Elegant, unisex, and unlike any other Patek, it stood apart from traditional models like the Calatrava, while remaining unmistakably a creation of the Maison. It quickly became a symbol of refined, understated chic. In addition to its distinctive elliptical case, the Golden Ellipse is celebrated for its remarkable blue gold dial. What appears at first as a refined sunburst finish is, in fact, the result of an innovative process developed by dial maker Singer. After early plating attempts proved inconsistent, a breakthrough came with vacuum-plating cobalt and 24K gold onto an 18K gold base—a technique so novel it drew scrutiny from Switzerland’s precious metals bureau for its originality and complexity. This example, reference 3848, is the elegant mid-size variant produced from the late 1970s to the 1990s. It features the model’s most iconic configuration: a radiant gold blue dial paired with an elegant 18K yellow gold case. Complete with its original Patek Philippe strap and distinctive 18K oval buckle, this timepiece remains a timeless symbol of refined design—now offered to the highest bidder.
