Rolex Oysterdate 6694 - "Mickey Mouse" Dial In the pivotal year of 1953, when Rolex introduced the trio of watches that would launch its Professional line—ultimately becoming the brand's most successful collection—the company also quietly released reference 6094. This model, known as the first Oysterdate, was a descendant of the groundbreaking Datejust, the first self-winding wristwatch to feature an automatically changing date at midnight. However, unlike the Datejust, the Oysterdate 6094 incorporated only one of these innovations: the date function. It forwent the automatic movement in favor of a manual-winding mechanism. In the late 1950s, Rolex introduced reference 6694, which retained the manual-wind and date combination. It would go on to remain in production for an exceptionally long time, being phased out only at the end of the 1980s. For over three decades, the 6694 served as the entry point into Rolex's catalog—a dependable and accessible classic. The 34mm Oyster case—slightly smaller than the Datejust—features Rolex's signature proportions and screw-down components. Interestingly, the Oysterdate is one of the few Rolex references that does not feature the brand's signature baton hands. Instead, it opts for sharp, pencil-style hands, giving the watch a distinctive character and setting it apart within the collection. Powered by the Rolex caliber 1225, the 6694 offers smooth winding and great timekeeping. Its manual-wind movement adds to its vintage charm and fosters a connection between the wearer and the timepiece. The present example, dating to 1964, was customized by a previous owner with an aftermarket dial featuring Mickey Mouse, the beloved Disney character generations have grown up with. Playfully depicted in motion, Mickey occupies the center of the dial. The watch has been kept in great condition.
