Rolex Submariner No Date 5513 - Black "Bicchierini” Dial - Rolex Punched Warranty

In 1959, Rolex introduced reference 5512, followed three years later by reference 5513. Nearly identical in design, they differ in one key aspect: COSC certification. The 5512 was chronometer-certified, while the 5513 was not—resulting in a cleaner, less text-heavy dial. Together, these references define the “classic” Submariner era, introducing several enduring features, including the larger 40mm case and the debut of crown guards. Before settling on the now-iconic rounded guards, Rolex experimented with several designs, ultimately choosing the softer, more balanced shape known today. Both references remained in production for decades. The 5512 was produced until 1978, and the 5513 continued until 1989. Over its lifespan, the 5513 saw various dial changes, typically grouped into three types. First were the “gilt” dials—nicknamed “mirror dials” by Japanese collectors—carried over from 1950s styling. These were succeeded by the matte dials, perhaps the most widely recognized style (see Lot ID: 1906022). In its final years, Rolex introduced a glossy black dial with applied “bicchierini” (or “little glass”) indices, lending the watch a more modern aesthetic. This particular watch, dating to 1985, belongs to that final dial category. The glossy black surface subtly recalls the original gilt style, while the raised bicchierini markers usher in the contemporary Submariner look that continues today. Well-preserved, this example features a clean dial and sharp black bezel insert. It is accompanied by its original Rolex punched warranty and green serial-number hang tag. Originally sold in Hong Kong in early 1987, this Submariner 5513 represents a superb example of the model’s final vintage evolution.
