Founded in 2006 by designer Pierre Lheureux, MAD Paris has spent nearly two decades redefining the world of luxury watch customization. Based in the French capital, the studio is renowned for its bold, uncompromising approach, pushing the limits of traditional Swiss watchmaking while forging collaborations with some of the most influential names in streetwear and contemporary fashion. Among its many transformations, MAD Paris is perhaps best known for its signature blacked-out Rolexes, stealthy, luxurious, and rebellious. The present example began life as a classic Rolex Datejust 36, reference 116234, before being reimagined by MAD into a thoroughly modern, rule-breaking timepiece. The stainless steel case and white gold fluted bezel were completely coated using a high-grade PVD process, resulting in a deep, uniform black finish for the case, while the bracelet retains its original two-tone finish adding visual complexity. The dial is set with 11 brilliant-cut diamond hour markers and features a 'MAD' signature above the 6 o'clock text, perhaps a nod to the personalized double signatures once offered by select Rolex retailers. Inside, the watch is powered by the Rolex calibre 3135, an in-house automatic movement introduced in 1988 as the successor to the short-lived calibre 3035. Beating at 4 Hz and equipped with a quickset date function, the 3135 has earned a reputation as one of Rolex's most reliable and enduring calibers, trusted across multiple collections for its robustness and precision. Ahead of its time, MAD Paris replaced the original solid caseback with a custom sapphire display back, revealing the calibre 3135 movement. This feature, long requested by watch enthusiasts, has only recently been embraced by Rolex itself in a few of its most exclusive releases, including the all-new, top-of-the-line Land-Dweller collection. This MAD Paris-customized Rolex Datejust is a striking modern reinterpretation of one of the most iconic and classiest watches in the Crown's catalog.
