Description
Rolex “Pre-Daytona” Oyster Chronograph 6238 - White Dial
The reference 6238 serves as the bridge connecting traditional-designed Rolex chronographs to their modern counterparts, which would soon feature the iconic "Daytona" text.
Introduced in the early 1960s, the reference 6238 was produced until 1967, when it was completely replaced in the catalog by various iterations of the Daytona. For this reason, the reference is affectionately known among collectors as the "Pre-Daytona," highlighting its role as the predecessor to the renowned model. It's important to note, however, that the first Daytona, reference 6239, was produced almost simultaneously with the 6238, starting a year later and running a year longer. The first 6239 models were signed only "Cosmograph," with the "Daytona" signature being introduced later in the production run. Interestingly, Rolex also experimented with alternative names for the model line, such as "Le Mans" (which was never printed on the dial), after the iconic 24-hour race.
The 6238 is the last chronograph produced by Rolex to feature a smooth bezel and a printed scale on the dial (although not always), rather than on the bezel itself. It is also the last model to feature a monochromatic dial, (with Rolex first experimenting with contrasting sub-dials, in very limited quantities on this reference, with the rare "Panda" version).
This particular example belongs to the very first series of the watch, where the 6238 inherits the monochromatic dial with leaf-shaped indices from the 6034 and 6234, either with or without a scale (as seen in this case).
Under the screw-down caseback, this timepiece reveals another peculiar feature: the chronograph bridge is signed "ROW," an import mark used at the time specifically for Rolex movements exported to the U.S. in compliance with an American law that was in effect until the late 1960s.
Finally, the cherry on top: this timepiece is fitted with the coveted riveted Oyster bracelet, adding a bit more sportiness and a distinctly vintage feel.
Early 6238 models are the perfect choice for collectors seeking a three-counter chronograph powered by an exceptionally reliable Valjoux movement, featuring a "classic" monochrome dial within a more modern, sporty, and, most importantly, robust oyster-like case.
This particular example, dating to 1962, is one of the very first produced. It began its life in the U.S. and has arrived today in excellent condition. It is now available to the highest bidder.
