Description

Rolex Submariner No Date 5513 - Black Gilt Dial - Oyster Riveted Bracelet

The Rolex Submariner 5513 Gilt Dial is one of the most iconic and collectible vintage dive watches, embodying the golden era of Rolex tool watches. Introduced in 1962, the 5513 was produced for over 25 years, making it one of the longest-running Submariner references. However, early examples featuring gilt dials, characterized by their glossy black finish with gold-colored text, were only produced until the mid-1960s, making them particularly rare and desirable. The 5513 was designed as a professional dive watch, featuring a stainless steel 40mm case, a rotating black bezel with a 60-minute scale, and a highly legible dial with luminescent markers. Unlike its counterpart, the 5512, the 5513 did not feature chronometer certification, meaning it was equipped with the Rolex Caliber 1520 or 1530, making it a simpler yet equally robust alternative. The gilt dials of the early 5513 models are among their most distinctive features. Unlike later matte dials, gilt dials have a glossy lacquered surface with gold-toned text that was etched into the dial and then covered with clear lacquer, giving them an almost three-dimensional effect. These dials often exhibit tropical aging, developing warm brown or amber tones over time, adding to their unique appeal. Another key characteristic of early 5513 gilt dials is the chapter ring, a circular track connecting the minute markers, which was phased out by the late 1960s. These early variants also featured radium lume until Rolex transitioned to tritium around 1964, with dials then marked "CSwiss" or "Swiss – T<25" at the 6 o’clock position. As a vintage Submariner with deep historical significance, the Rolex 5513 Gilt Dial remains a holy grail for collectors. Its combination of tool-watch functionality, elegant gilt printing, and beautiful patina potential makes it one of the most visually striking and historically important Submariner references ever produced. This particular example, dated from 1966, has a unique vintage charm due to its faded bezel and its gilt dial. The watch is in excellent condition.
