Description

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6262 - Baby Blue - Oyster Folded Bracelet - 200 Scale Bezel

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 6262, introduced in 1970 and produced for only about one year, is one of the rarest and most transitional Daytona references ever made. It bridged the gap between the earlier 6239 and the later 6265, retaining the vintage charm of the hand-wound Daytonas while introducing significant technical upgrades. At first glance, the 6262 closely resembles the 6239, featuring a stainless steel 37mm Oyster case, an engraved steel bezel with a tachymeter scale, and a dial configuration with the classic three-register chronograph layout. The watch was available in both black and silver dials, with signature contrasting sub-dials and the “DAYTONA” inscription above the 6 o’clock sub-dial in certain variations. What makes the 6262 stand out is its movement: it was powered by the Valjoux 727, an upgraded version of the Valjoux 722-1 used in previous Daytona references. This new caliber offered a higher frequency, significantly improving accuracy and chronograph performance. Despite this technical leap, the 6262 remained a manually wound chronograph, as Rolex had yet to introduce automatic Daytonas (which arrived with the 16520 in 1988). One of the last Daytona references to feature a pump-style chronograph pusher instead of screw-down pushers, the 6262 maintained a water resistance of 50 meters, reinforcing its status as a precision racing tool rather than a full-fledged sports watch. The bezel was engraved with a 200-unit per hour tachymeter scale, emphasizing its purpose as a driver’s chronograph, a tool designed for measuring speed over a known distance. Due to its extremely short production run, the Rolex Daytona 6262 is one of the rarest vintage Daytona references, making it highly desirable among collectors. Its combination of historical significance, upgraded movement, and classic styling cements its place as a grail piece in the world of vintage Rolex chronographs. This timepiece earned the nickname “Baby Blue” due to a distinctive aging process observed on its black matte dials. Over time, the "Daytona" inscription, originally printed in white, can develop a subtle yet striking light blue patina, creating a unique and highly sought-after variation among collectors.
