Description

Rolex Submariner 6536-1 - Brown Tropical Gilt Dial - Oyster Riveted Bracelet

The Rolex Submariner 6536-1, introduced in 1955, is one of the earliest and most historically significant references in the Submariner lineage. As an evolution of the original Submariner 6204 and 6205, the 6536-1 refined Rolex’s dive watch design, setting the stage for what would become one of the most iconic timepieces in horology. With a thin, 38mm stainless steel case, the 6536-1 was among the first Submariners to feature a chronometer-certified movement, the Rolex Caliber 1030, a bi-directional automatic movement that improved both precision and reliability. Unlike the earlier no-chronometer models, the 6536-1 dial proudly displayed the "Officially Certified Chronometer" text in later production runs, marking a shift towards Rolex’s commitment to high-precision dive watches. One of its most distinctive features was the small crown (6mm) without crown guards, giving it a sleek and minimalist profile compared to later Submariners. This reference also retained the red triangle bezel insert, a signature trait of early Submariners, which added both functionality and a touch of vintage charm. The bezel itself was bidirectional and featured a 60-minute scale for tracking dive times, though without the later ratcheting mechanism. The dial of the 6536-1 went through multiple variations during its production, with early models featuring gilt printing, radium-filled hour markers, and Mercedes hands, providing excellent legibility underwater. The radiation levels from the radium lume were notably high, a characteristic of early dive watches before Rolex transitioned to tritium in later models. Water-resistant to 100 meters (330 feet), the 6536-1 was a professional-grade dive watch, though its depth rating would soon be surpassed by later models like the 5512 and 5513. Despite its relatively short production period, the 6536-1 remains one of the most coveted vintage Submariners due to its rarity, early design traits, and historical significance in Rolex’s evolution of dive watches. Today, it is a highly collectible piece, representing the pioneering spirit of Rolex’s deep-sea exploration legacy. This example, crafted in 1957 and kept in excellent condition, features one of the most interesting brown tropical gilt dials that gives the watch a unique look.
