Description

Rolex GMT-Master 16700 - Blue and Red Faded “Pepsi” Bezel - Rolex Service

Rolex GMT-Master 16700 - Blue and Red Faded "Pepsi" Bezel The Rolex GMT-Master 16700, introduced in 1988, represents the final evolution of the original GMT-Master line before being fully replaced by the GMT-Master II series. Designed for professional pilots and world travelers, the 16700 carried forward the legacy of Rolex's dual-time-zone functionality while incorporating several modern advancements. Encased in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, the 16700 maintained the classic proportions and robust construction that defined the GMT-Master. It featured a bi-directional rotating bezel with a 24-hour scale, allowing wearers to track a second time zone when used in conjunction with the iconic red GMT hand. The model was available with the legendary blue-and-red "Pepsi" bezel or a more understated all-black bezel, offering versatility in aesthetic appeal. Powering the 16700 was the Rolex Caliber 3175, an automatic movement with a quickset date function, a significant improvement over its predecessor, the 16750, as it allowed for independent adjustment of the date without moving the hour hand. However, unlike the GMT-Master II of the era (16710), the 16700 featured a non-independent hour hand, meaning the second time zone had to be tracked using the bezel rather than a separate hand adjustment. Another notable feature was its transition from tritium lume to Luminova in later models to enhance legibility in low-light conditions. The watch was offered with either an Oyster bracelet or a Jubilee bracelet, allowing for a choice between a sportier or more refined look. Produced until 1999, the Rolex GMT-Master 16700 remains a highly sought-after reference among collectors. As the last of the original GMT-Master models before Rolex fully shifted to the GMT-Master II series, it holds a special place in horological history, blending vintage charm with modern functionality. This timepiece, crafted in 1994, features a charming blue and red faded aluminum bezel and a black bicchierini dial. The watch has been kept in excellent condition.
