Description

Rolex Explorer II 1655 “Freccione” - MK1 Dial - Straight Hand - Folded Oyster Bracelet

Rolex Explorer 2 "Freccione" - MK1 Dial - Straight Hand The Rolex Explorer II 1655 Mk1, introduced in 1971, is one of the most distinctive and historically significant tool watches ever produced by Rolex. Designed specifically for spelunkers and cave explorers, the reference 1655 featured an innovative 24-hour hand and fixed bezel, allowing wearers to differentiate between day and night in environments devoid of natural light. Unlike its predecessor, the Explorer 1016, which was designed for mountaineering, the 1655 was built with a unique functionality tailored to extreme underground exploration. The Mk1 version, often referred to as the "Straight Hand" due to its distinctive, elongated 24-hour hand, is one of the most sought-after variations. Early Mk1 dials featured unique typography, with the coronet and "EXPLORER II" text differing from later iterations. The orange 24-hour hand, which later became a signature design element, was originally more muted in shade but has often aged to a vibrant hue, adding to its vintage appeal. The dial itself was highly legible, with large tritium-filled hour markers and a date window at 3 o'clock magnified by the Cyclops lens. Powering the 1655 was the robust Rolex Caliber 1575, an automatic movement known for its reliability and precision. Encased in a 39mm stainless steel Oyster case with thick lugs and a brushed finish, the watch exuded a rugged and utilitarian aesthetic. Despite its intended professional use, the 1655 gained notoriety as the "Steve McQueen" Explorer, although there is no documented evidence of the actor ever wearing one. Discontinued in 1985, the reference 1655 remains a grail piece among collectors, with the Mk1 dial variant being particularly rare and valuable. Its bold design, historical significance, and unique purpose-driven features cement its place as one of the most iconic Rolex sports watches ever made. This particular timepiece, manufactured in 1973, features the iconic MK1 Dial. The watch has been preserved in excellent condition.
