The Rolex GMT-Master 16700, introduced in 1988, marked the final chapter of the original GMT-Master line before the full transition to the GMT-Master II series. Designed for pilots and world travelers, it preserved Rolex's iconic dual-time-zone functionality while incorporating modern upgrades. Housed in a 40mm stainless steel Oyster case, the 16700 retained the classic proportions and rugged construction of its predecessors. It featured a bi-directional 24-hour bezel paired with the red GMT hand to track a second time zone. Bezel options included the iconic blue-and-red "Pepsi," red-and-black "Coke," and an all-black version for understated appeal. Unlike the GMT-Master II (ref. 16710), the 16700 lacked an independently adjustable hour hand, meaning the second time zone had to be tracked using the bezel rather than a separate hand adjustment. Key updates included the introduction of a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and the transition from tritium to Luminova lume, reflecting Rolex's shift away from radioactive materials. Produced until 1999, the GMT-Master 16700 remains a favorite among collectors, valued as the last true GMT-Master before the evolution to the GMT-Master II. It bridges vintage charm and modern reliability. This particular piece was produced in 1991 and sold in 1993 in Livorno, Italy. It features an early tritium dial, classic "Pepsi" bezel, and Oyster bracelet. Notably, it comes with its original Rolex warranty and remains in well-preserved condition.
