The Royal Oak model was originally designed in 1971 by Gérald Genta at the request of Georges Golay, then the general manager of Audemars Piguet. This launch disrupted the luxury watchmaking industry during a challenging period, and while it appears to be a success story in hindsight, the initial reception was not without its obstacles. The first 35.5mm model, a contemporary of the 5402, was released in 1976, marking the birth of the 4100 reference. Initially developed as ref. 25685BA with the caliber 2129, the Dual Time version was introduced to the Royal Oak collection in 1992. The Royal Oak Dual Time allows for the display of two time zones, date, and power reserve. The "petite tapisserie" pattern on the dial has evolved and increased in size over time.
