Rolex Explorer II 16570

The Explorer II Ref. 16570 was introduced in 1989 and went through a remarkable production run of almost 22 years before passing the baton to its successor, Ref. 216570. This model was available in two variants, with a black dial and a white polar dial, like the present example. In the course of the reference's evolution, different luminous materials were used. In the first specimens, produced between about 1989 and 1997, tritium was used, evidenced by the marking 'SWISS-T<25' at 6 o'clock. In the later specimens, dating from about 1998 to 1999, Luminova was used, with the marking 'SWISS' only. The final transitional phase saw the use of Super-Luminova material, as indicated by the 'SWISS MADE' marking, as in the case of the current example. Regarded among collectors as one of Rolex's most underrated models, the Ref. 16570 not only offers remarkable technical prowess but also a sophisticated aesthetic that pays homage to a passion for adventure. In the context of the recent launch of the new 42 mm diameter Explorer II, ref. 226570 in 2021, the current Explorer II, with classic proportions, represents an exceptional opportunity for collectors to own a now discontinued exploration icon.
