Description
Cartier Baignoire XL 3033 - Opaline Guilloché Dial - 18K Rose Gold
Cartier was established in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, who took over the workshop of his mentor. In 1874, Louis-François' son, Alfred, succeeded him, but it was Alfred's three sons: Louis, Pierre, and Jacques who solidified Cartier's reputation on the global stage, each managing their own branches around the world, respectively: Paris, London and New York.
Louis, the eldest of three, managed the Paris boutique from the late 19th century. Alberto Santos-Dumont, the renowned Brazilian aviator celebrated in turn-of-the-century Paris for his daring feat of circumnavigating the Eiffel Tower in an airship, approached his friend Louis Cartier with a unique request. He needed a timepiece that would allow him to check the time effortlessly while flying, as his pocket watch proved impractical. In 1904, Cartier responded by creating the first men's wristwatch, later named 'Santos' in honor of its distinguished commissioner.
Louis Cartier believed deeply in the potential of the wristwatch and continued to explore new shapes and designs over the following decades, giving rise to some of the maison's most iconic creations, including the legendary Tank. Among his earliest and most visionary concepts was the Baignoire, first conceived in 1912. The model later evolved into its signature elongated oval form in 1958, a silhouette that would become one of Cartier's most recognisable expressions of elegance.
The name Baignoire, French for 'bathtub', is often said to reference its distinctive, gently curved shape. Others suggest it may instead draw inspiration from the refined baignoire seating found in opera houses, a fitting parallel for a watch defined by sophistication and quiet luxury. Whatever its origin, the design marked a bold departure from the traditional round cases of the era, reflecting Cartier's pioneering spirit and unwavering commitment to artistic innovation.
Over the years, the Baignoire has been reinterpreted many times, with each evolution incorporating modern touches while preserving the model's timeless essence. The present example, dating to the 1990s, represents one of these later, modernised iterations. In its large size and crafted in rose gold, it brings a more assertive presence to the wrist while maintaining the graceful lines and understated refinement that define the Baignoire line.
In great condition, this Cartier offers an ideal choice for those seeking the elegance of the French maison in a subtly contemporary interpretation, combining heritage, style, and wearability with effortless charm.
