Rolex Daytona 16520 'Zenith' - Striking 'Dégradé Patrizzi' Dial - 'W' Serial
At the 1988 Basel Watch Fair, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Daytona, Rolex introduced a model that marked a decisive break from its predecessors. For decades, the Daytona had evolved through measured refinements, its most significant upgrade being the adoption of screw-down pushers, yet its fundamental architecture had remained largely unchanged since the debut of reference 6239.
With the launch of the 165XX series, however, the chronograph entered an entirely new chapter. At the heart of this new generation was the Rolex Calibre 4030, derived from the iconic Zenith El Primero. Rather than adopting the movement in its original form, Rolex subjected it to an extensive programme of re-engineering in Geneva. More than 200 modifications were implemented, including the elimination of the date mechanism, a reduction in frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, and a complete reworking of the regulating organ. These alterations ensured the movement conformed to Rolex's rigorous criteria for stability, precision, and reliability.
This model transformed the Daytona from a difficult sell into a true object of desire, and due to limited access to Zenith movements, production numbers remained consistently constrained, creating a lasting imbalance between supply and demand. Since its introduction, the reference has earned a cult following for its historical importance and its beautifully balanced proportions.
Two dial variants sit at the pinnacle of collectability for the reference, one for each colour. For the white dials, the first-series 'Porcelain' examples represent the undisputed apex, while for the black dials, the unquestioned icons are the beloved 'Patrizzi' dials.
The coveted "Patrizzi" designation refers to a rare phenomenon affecting, to a significant degree, only a specific range of serials of black-dial examples, in which the original silver subdials develop a warm brown patina over time due to oxidation of the organic varnish used in the production process. Named after renowned watch expert Osvaldo Patrizzi, who first documented this anomaly, these naturally aged dials have since become a hallmark of rarity and desirability among collectors.
Notably, on the present example, the compax have darkened, developing a striking and incredibly charming degradé effect, with a stronger, deeper patina on the left that gradually fades into a lighter tone toward the right. This remarkable ageing sets the watch apart, giving it exceptional distinction. The present timepiece, dating from 1995, comes from the later years of Zenith Daytona production and therefore features the two-finish Oyster bracelet, a detail that would carry over to its successor, reference 116520. Importantly, this historically significant watch has been preserved in excellent condition.
