Rolex Daytona 6263 – Rare 'MK1 Sigma' Argenté Dial – 'MK2' Black Acrylic Bezel
In the collecting world, few watches hold as much legendary status and significance as the 4-digit Daytonas. Often considered the catalyst for the boom in vintage watch collecting, the first model in the lineage debuted in the early 1960s with the iconic reference 6239. By 1972, the dynasty reached its culmination with the release of the final two references before the transition to automatic movements in 1988: the revered 6263 and 6265.
Distinguished only by their bezels—an acrylic insert for the 6263 and an engraved steel bezel for the 6265—these two references represent the pinnacle of manual-wind Daytonas. They benefited from numerous upgrades and refinements, standing as the ultimate expression of the classic Cosmograph before the advent of automatic calibres.
At their core beats the Valjoux 727, an evolved movement operating at a higher frequency, allowing for improved accuracy and enhanced chronograph performance. Rolex also equipped the watch with a larger 7 mm Triplock crown and introduced a redefined case shape first seen in transitional references 6262 and 6264. Together with the revolutionary screw-down pushers—initially tested on the prototype 6240—these innovations finally justified the addition of the word “Oyster” on the dial.
Between the two references, the 6263 is considered the more desirable and collectible due to its contrasting black acrylic bezel, which imparts a distinctive vintage charm and strong visual identity.
The example presented here is an exceptional and rare *first-series* specimen. Produced only during the earliest years of the reference, these early executions are considerably rarer than the more widely recognised “Big Red” variants. Their appeal extends beyond rarity: the early dial layout is cleaner, more balanced, and more refined. A careful eye will also identify the present argenté dial as a “Sigma” dial—recognisable by the discreet sigma symbols flanking the “T Swiss T” inscription at 6 o'clock, indicating that the hour markers and hands are crafted from gold, in this instance white gold.
Italian collectors refer to this specific execution as a *“Sigma Strette”* (Tight Sigma), marking the very first generation of sigma dials. Later examples feature sigma marks positioned further apart, adding yet another layer of collectibility.
Very well preserved and perfectly period-correct, this first-series 6263 stands as a remarkable early specimen, presenting the coveted MK1 Sigma dial paired with the MK2 black acrylic bezel. It embodies the rarity, refinement, and historical importance that define the most sought-after early 6263 models.
