Description

Rolex Daytona 16520 ‘Zenith’ - ‘Inverted 6’ White Dial - Brushed Bracelet - ‘N’ Serial

The 'myth': this is the nickname the Rolex Daytona has earned over the years among Italian collectors. While the manual-wind models have now achieved iconic collectability, it was their successor, the 'Zenith' Daytona, that propelled the watch to global stardom. In 1988, at the Basel Watch Fair, Rolex unveiled the new Daytona to celebrate the model's twenty-fifth anniversary. After decades of subtle refinements, aside from the pivotal revolution of screw-down pushers, the Daytona was completely reimagined for the first time since its inception with the 6239 in the early 1960s. Most importantly, with this new version the Daytona would feature, for the first time, an automatic movement: the caliber Rolex 4030, derived from the historically important Zenith El Primero. Each Zenith ébauche underwent extensive reworking in the Geneva hills, with roughly half of its components replaced, with a total of around 200 modifications performed. Among the most notable changes were the reduction of the frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, the removal of the date mechanism, and the substantial upgrades to the regulating organ. Visually, the changes were equally impactful. The case size increased from 37.5 mm to a modern 40 mm, and now featured crown guards flanking the screw-down pushers, aligning the Daytona more closely with the rest of Rolex's professional line. Both the dial and case design were modernized, ushering the watch into a new era of sport-luxury appeal. Production numbers remained always limited due to Rolex's restricted access to Zenith movements, while in stark contrast, customers flooded authorized Rolex dealers, eager to purchase the new Daytona. This significant imbalance between supply and demand made the 'Zenith' Daytona the first watch in history to command a premium over its retail price on the secondary market, a feat that has been repeated with each subsequent iteration, continuing to the present day. The present example, reference 16520, dates to 1992 and therefore belongs to the early years of production. As such, it features the celebrated 'Inverted 6' on the hours subdial and is fitted with the all-brushed Oyster bracelet, remaining faithful to the model's original tool-watch aesthetic and giving the watch a distinctly vintage appeal. Both characteristics are exclusive to the early 'Zenith' examples and were soon phased out in subsequent production. This example, boasting a white dial, has been preserved in great condition and comes with an exceptionally desirable set, including the original Italian Rolex punched warranty (dated 1993), a Rolex service card with its original receipt (dated 2012), box, outer box, and booklets.
