Description
Rolex Chronograph ‘Pre-Daytona’ 6238 - Argenté Soleil Dial
Rolex Chronograph 'Pre-Daytona' 6238 – Argenté Soleil Dial
Introduced in the early 1960s, Reference 6238 predates the launch of the first Daytona by several years. Consequently, it is widely known among collectors as the 'Pre-Daytona', a nickname that highlights its important role as the direct predecessor to the iconic model. Despite this, it is important to note that the 6238 was available alongside the Daytona for much of its production run, only being phased out around 1967.
The 6238 serves as the pivotal link in Rolex's chronograph lineage, bridging the brand's earlier, more traditional models with the modern and sporty counterpart that directly followed. Its transitional nature is reflected in a design that seamlessly blends these two souls and aesthetics, making it highly appealing to collectors who appreciate vintage-inspired dials while also valuing a sportier case. The 6238's case is, in fact, nearly identical to the one later adopted for the 6239, perfectly balanced at 36mm: one of the most versatile and timeless proportions in watchmaking.
As for the dial, it's worth noting that the 6238 was the last Rolex chronograph to feature graduated scales printed directly on the dial. This allowed the bezel to remain plain and smooth, giving the watch a more refined and understated appearance compared to its successors. It was also the last chronograph produced by the Crown to feature monochromatic dials. That said, a few examples with contrasting subdials, so-called 'Panda' dials, have surfaced over the years, leading some to suggest that Rolex's experimentation with this now-iconic Daytona hallmark may have begun with this very reference.
The model was powered first by the Rolex calibre 72B and later by the 722, both refined versions of the renowned hand-wound Valjoux 72 column-wheel chronograph movement. The Valjoux calibre was one of the best off-the-shelf chronograph movements available at the time and was used by many of Switzerland's top watchmakers. True to form, Rolex wasn't content to stop there and took this already exceptional calibre even further with its exclusive versions.
This particular example, dates to 1964, and comes in the most quintessential and representative configuration for the reference: boasting the argenté dial with the soleil finishing, that gives the watch a vibrant, living quality under the light. A fun fact for aficionados of the seventh art: this very configuration of the model was immortalized on the wrist of the legendary secret agent, portrayed by George Lazenby, in the cult-classic James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service, making it as much a Bond watch as the Submariner 'Big Crown' reference 6538. Preserved in good condition, this example comes fitted with a pebble-textured light brown leather strap and is now available to the highest bidder.
