Longines Chronograph 30CH 7413 – Gold Indexes & Hands
Founded in 1832 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, Longines stands among the most storied names in horology. From its earliest years, the brand distinguished itself through technical innovation, precision, and elegance. Under the leadership of Auguste Agassiz and later Ernest Francillon, Longines revolutionized watch production by centralizing manufacturing in its factory at “Les Longines” in 1867—making it one of the first true industrial watchmakers in Switzerland. Its winged hourglass logo, registered in 1889, is today the world’s oldest unchanged trademark still in use.
Longines’ contribution to chronograph history is unparalleled. It began with the Calibre 20H in 1878, followed by the 13.33Z in 1913, one of the earliest chronograph calibres designed specifically for wristwatches. But it was in the mid-20th century that Longines truly achieved mechanical mastery, producing two of the most revered chronograph movements ever made: the 13ZN (1936) and the 30CH (1940s onward).
Both were flyback column-wheel chronographs—a feature then reserved for professional-grade timepieces used in aviation and military contexts. The 30CH, in particular, refined the design with improved reliability, cleaner architecture, and even smoother pusher feel. It remains, to this day, a benchmark of mid-century chronograph engineering, admired for its precision, beauty, and tactile perfection.
The present example, reference 7413, dates to 1969 and is powered by the manual-wind Calibre 30CH (signed 530). Its 38 mm stainless steel case was considered oversized for the period, giving it a wrist presence that feels remarkably modern. Beneath the plexiglass crystal lies a finely balanced argenté dial with applied gold indexes and hands, providing subtle warmth and contrast while maintaining the tool-watch character inherent to Longines chronographs of the era.
The caseback engraving “7413-13” identifies this as a later production variant, aligning with the final generation of 30CH-equipped models before the movement was discontinued. The clean lines, broad lugs, and restrained proportions make it a quintessential 1960s design—functional, elegant, and timeless.
In good overall condition, this Longines 7413 represents one of the last expressions of the brand’s golden age of mechanical chronographs. It encapsulates the technical sophistication and design purity that have earned Longines an enduring place in the history of fine watchmaking.
