Description
Rolex Submariner Date 1680 - ‘Pallettoni’ Black Matte Dial
The Rolex Submariner, introduced in 1953, stands as one of the most enduring icons in horology, with a design language that has become instantly recognisable across the world of dive watches. Its balanced proportions and purposeful curves established a benchmark that has influenced countless tool watches over subsequent generations. Introduced alongside the Explorer and Turn-O-Graph, the Submariner entered a crucial phase of its development in 1959 with the arrival of the Rolex Submariner reference 5512. This reference introduced several defining characteristics that would shape the model’s identity, including the enlarged 40 mm case and the addition of protective crown guards, elements that remain central to its visual identity today.
The range expanded further in 1962 with the introduction of the Rolex Submariner reference 5513, a non-chronometer version of the 5512 designed as a more accessible interpretation while retaining the essential aesthetic and functional DNA of the model.
In 1967, Rolex introduced a major evolution with the Rolex Submariner Date reference 1680, the first Submariner to feature a date complication. Early executions of this reference were distinguished by the celebrated “Red Sub” dial, where the model name appeared in red text. These early variants were later replaced by versions featuring fully white printing, marking a shift towards a more modern and uniform visual identity.
The present example, dating to 1979, belongs to this later production phase and features the clean all-white dial configuration that would go on to define the Submariner Date’s mature aesthetic. Preserved in excellent overall condition, it retains strong visual clarity and balanced proportions, reflecting careful stewardship over time.
The introduction of the reference 1680 represented a significant milestone for Rolex, extending the practical usefulness of the date function—previously seen on models such as the Datejust—into its professional dive watch line. This synthesis of utility and robustness helped establish the Submariner Date as a cornerstone of the brand’s catalogue.
