Description

Zenith Chronograph El Primero A385 - Brown to Grey ‘Vignette’ Dial

Until the 1960s, all chronographs were manually wound. However, as automatic watches grew in popularity, the next major milestone in horology became clear: the creation of the world's first automatic chronograph. This was more than just a technical challenge—it became a fierce race for innovation and prestige. By the late 1960s, three independent groups, each working in complete secrecy, were locked in a neck-and-neck competition to develop this groundbreaking complication first. In Switzerland, a consortium of Heuer, Breitling, Hamilton-Buren, and Dubois-Dépraz developed the modular Calibre 11, combining a micro-rotor automatic base with a separate chronograph module. Meanwhile, in Japan, Seiko was working on the integrated Calibre 6139, notable for its vertical clutch and column-wheel design—a movement that would later earn recognition for being worn in space. Yet it was Zenith, with the El Primero, that delivered what many consider the most complete solution: a fully integrated, high-beat chronograph operating at 36,000 vibrations per hour. It combined innovation, reliability, and performance—and importantly, the only one of the three still in production in some form today. Which movement was truly first to market remains a delicate and often debated topic. Many point to the El Primero—its very name meaning 'The First'—as the pioneer, with its official debut often cited as January 1969. The then-new El Primero movement quickly found its home in a number of case designs, with the A384 and A385 standing out as one of the most iconic. Sharing the same distinctive tonneau-shaped case, the two models are differentiated only by their dial color. Offered here is a well-preserved example of the A385, featuring its gradient, or 'vignette', brown-to-grey dial, which has aged beautifully, creating a mesmerizing play of colors under different lighting conditions. The outer caseback still clearly displays the serial number, a testament to the great condition of the case. When removed, it reveals the legendary El Primero calibre 3019PHC in all its glory. The watch is fitted with an original service Zenith crown. The El Primero was such a remarkable calibre that even Rolex—long a leader in innovation and the key player in the development of modern automatic movements—turned to it when updating their chronograph line. In 1988, as they sought to overhaul the Daytona with a self-winding movement, Rolex chose the Zenith El Primero as the ébauche for their new calibre—an enduring testament to its craftsmanship and mechanical excellence. Fitted on a black suede leather strap, this historic and mechanically exceptional timepiece is a must-have for lovers of the Star brand, now offered to the highest bidder.
