Submariner prova
Description
Submariner prova
Few timepieces command instant recognition quite like the Rolex Submariner—a true icon not only in the world of dive watches, but in watchmaking as a whole. First introduced in 1953, the Submariner entered what may be considered its full maturity in 1959 with the debut of the Rolex Submariner reference 5512. This reference introduced several defining features that would shape the identity of the model for decades to come, including the increased 40 mm case diameter and the addition of crown guards. Before arriving at the now-iconic rounded configuration, Rolex experimented with alternative crown protection designs, ultimately selecting the softer, more harmonious form we recognise today.
Però c'è un paragrafo 2!
The lineage expanded in 1962 with the introduction of the Rolex Submariner ref. 5513, a non-chronometer-certified counterpart to the 5512, offering a more accessible interpretation while preserving the model’s essential character. Both references enjoyed remarkably long production runs—the 5512 until 1978 and the 5513 until 1989. The absence of chronometer text on the dial lends the 5513 a notably cleaner and more balanced aesthetic, a detail particularly appreciated by collectors.
Over the course of its production, the 5513 underwent several dial evolutions, commonly grouped into three principal categories. The earliest examples featured gilt dials—often referred to by Japanese collectors as “mirror dials”—which retained the visual charm of 1950s production. These were followed by matte dials, the configuration most closely associated with the reference among enthusiasts. The final evolution marked a decisive step toward modernity: the introduction of the glossy black dial, distinguished by applied indices framed in white gold, affectionately nicknamed “Bicchierini” by Italian collectors. This configuration introduced a more refined and contemporary aesthetic, establishing a visual language that continues to define the Submariner today.
The present Rolex Submariner No Date reference 5513, dating to circa 1985, belongs to this final and most evolved phase of production. Preserved in excellent overall condition, it is further enhanced by the presence of a Rolex Service Card valid until October 2027, offering both reassurance and continued reliability for future wear.
Of particular note is its highly attractive and collectible “spider” dial. This term, used in collector vernacular, describes a natural ageing phenomenon whereby the surface lacquer of the glossy dial develops a fine network of hairline fractures over time, creating a pattern reminiscent of a spider’s web. Far from being a flaw, this distinctive feature renders each example entirely unique, adding depth, character, and a compelling narrative to the watch.
Well preserved and rich in personality, this Submariner 5513 stands as an excellent example of the reference’s final evolution—where vintage charm, technical heritage, and individual character converge in a timepiece of enduring appeal.
