Description
Rolex Daytona “Zenith” 16528 - 18K Yellow Gold - White Dial with Gold Counters
The "myth" – this is how the Rolex Daytona has been described over the years by Italian collectors. What elevated its status worldwide, despite the current collectability of manual versions, was actually the successor to the '4-digit' models: the 'Zenith' Daytona.
In 1988, at the Basel Watch Fair, Rolex introduced the new Daytona to celebrate the model's twenty-fifth anniversary. After years of releasing new references with only subtle differences between the previous and subsequent models—aside from the screw-down pushers revolution—the Daytona was completely reimagined for the first time since its inception with reference 6239.
Most importantly, with this new version (ref. 165XX) the Daytona would feature, for the first time, an automatic movement (Cal. Rolex 4030), derived from the historically important Zenith El Primero. Every single Zenith movement received by Rolex during the production was extensively reworked in the Geneva hills, with half of the components replaced, totaling a staggering 200 modifications. The main changes included: reducing the oscillation frequency from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, removing the date, and the substantial upgrades to the balance wheel.
Aesthetic changes from the predecessor were also significant. The diameter was increased from 37.5 mm to a more modern 40 mm, and the crown and screw-down pushers were, for the first time, interspersed with crown guards, helping to protect the crown and aligning the Daytona's design with the rest of the brand's professional collection. Finally, the dial and case were undoubtedly modernized, thus propelling the model into the future.
Production was extremely limited due to Rolex's restricted access to the base Zenith movement. In stark contrast, customers flooded authorized Rolex dealers, eager to purchase the new Daytona. This significant imbalance between supply and demand made the 'Zenith' Daytona the first watch in history to command a premium over its retail price on the secondary market—a feat that has been repeated with each subsequent iteration, continuing to the present day.
The present example, reference 16528, is crafted in 18K yellow gold and represents the final stage of production. As such, the white glossy dial is adorned with champagne-colored chronograph counters, contrasting with earlier models that featured more subtle gold-black subdials. This final layout was retained for the “Zenith” successor, reference number 1165XX, the first Daytona to feature an in-house chronograph movement (Cal. Rolex 4130).
This iconic timepiece, which revolutionized both the watchmaking world and the “Crown” itself, dates back to 1995 and would make a remarkable addition to any collection. This Daytona 16528 has been maintained in very good condition and is now available to the highest bidder.
