Rolex GMT-Master 16750 - Black ‘Spider’ Dial
Description
Rolex GMT-Master 16750 - Black ‘Spider’ Dial
In 1980, Rolex retired the legendary 1675 and introduced the new 16750—the first of four five-digit GMT references (including later GMT-Master II models) that the Crown would go on to produce. Today, the 16750 is considered a highly collectible and significant reference, prized for its transitional nature.
While it retained the acrylic crystal (the last model to do so) of its predecessor—preserving the warm, domed aesthetic that gives it a distinctly vintage character—the 16750 introduced a notable mechanical upgrade: the Caliber 3075. Thanks to its higher beat rate, this movement offered improved timekeeping precision. More significantly, it was the first in the GMT line to feature a quickset date function—marking a major leap forward in both practicality and user convenience.
As a model born during a highly transitional period for Rolex, the reference 16750 also underwent a notable aesthetic evolution over its production run. Early examples featured the classic matte black dial with ‘Pallettoni’ hour markers—an inheritance from the 1675. Later iterations introduced a glossy black dial with applied white gold ‘Bicchierini’ indices filled with luminous material. The shift marked a clear step toward contemporary design language, further highlighting the 16750’s hybrid character—straddling the line between vintage charm and modern refinement.
Interestingly, some of these later glossy dials developed an intriguing and visually captivating effect over time. The top transparent lacquer layer, applied to protect the dial's surface, would sometimes crack in a delicate, spiderweb-like pattern. This hidden effect, visible only under the right lighting, has earned such examples the collector’s nickname ‘Spider Dial’.
The present 16750 is a well-preserved and highly attractive example, boasting this rare and captivating ‘Spider’ glossy black dial. It is offered accompanied with its original warranty—further enhancing its appeal to discerning collectors.
