Description
Omega Speedmaster Professional ‘Moonwatch’ 145
The Omega Speedmaster, introduced in 1957 as a racing chronograph, quickly transcended its original purpose. In 1965, it was certified by NASA for all manned space missions and, in 1969, became the first watch worn on the Moon during Apollo 11. Its historic role and timeless design have cemented the Speedmaster as one of the most iconic and important timepieces ever created.
Over the decades, Omega introduced numerous Speedmaster variations—including, in the early 2000s, a moonphase complication. Powered by the hand-wound caliber 1866 (a derivative of the famed 1861), this timepiece features four sub-dials on a striking argenté sunburst dial. Three serve the classic chronograph functions, while the upper sub-dial at 12 o’clock combines a pointer date and moonphase display. These additional complications are easily adjusted via two discreet pushers on the upper left side of the case.
Despite its added functionality, the watch retains the classic 42mm Speedmaster case and manual-wind movement—an essential trait in a watch originally designed for space. Its design also nods to the earliest Speedmasters, with features such as engraved stainless steel tachymeter bezel and distinctive “Broad Arrow” hands reminiscent of the original 1957 Speedmaster model.
This example benefited from a comprehensive overhaul in 2020, with service costs amounting to £905. Included with the watch is the receipt for the service, as well as the original dial, a complete set of hands, crown, and other components that were replaced during the intervention. Notably, the crown, the original dial and set of hands remain in good condition, making them highly valuable components.
The timepiece has been preserved in great condition and is accompanied not only by the aforementioned items, but also by an Omega box and outer box.
