Description
Cartier Pasha Chronograph - Beige Dial
In the early 1930s, Thami El Glaoui, the Pasha of Marrakech, renowned for his opulent lifestyle and uncanny ability to get what he wanted, commissioned Cartier, the storied French jewelry maison, to create a bespoke wristwatch. It needed to withstand his dynamic lifestyle but, above all, had to be waterproof.
At the time, wristwatches were still in their infancy, and one of the greatest technical challenges in this watchmaking era was protecting the movement from dust and water. But the Pasha was not a man accustomed to compromise, and Cartier was not a house known for backing down from a challenge. Rising to the occasion, the maison delivered a timepiece ahead of its time: featuring a relatively large case, a crown cap, and a protective metal grid over the dial.
Although no photographs of the original watch exist, Cartier has confirmed that a special waterproof model was indeed delivered to the Pasha. Decades later, this historic commission would go on to inspire one of the brand’s modern icons: the Cartier Pasha.
It was Alain-Dominique Perrin, Cartier’s CEO from 1975 to 1998, who recognized a clear market demand for a luxury watch that was both bold and functional. He envisioned a masculine, waterproof timepiece suitable for everyday wear, without sacrificing the distinctive elegance Cartier is known for, and to bring this vision to life, he enlisted Gérald Genta, the legendary watch designer credited with creating the world’s first and most collectible luxury sports watches. The result was the Cartier Pasha, launched in 1985: a distinctive and resilient timepiece that paid tribute to the original model made for the Pasha of Marrakech, while reaffirming Cartier’s place in the evolving world of high-end watchmaking.
The present example, dating to 1992, represents a further evolution in the Pasha lineage: the chronograph variant. Powered by the quartz caliber 053, it boasts a distinctive beige dial complemented by unusually shaped elliptical chronograph counters. This watch has been preserved in very good condition and is offered with its original warranty and booklet.
