Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Dual Time 25730ST - Black Dial and White Dial - Full Set

Unveiled in 1972, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak was a groundbreaking creation that redefined the concept of the luxury watch. Designed by the legendary Gérald Genta in just one night, the Royal Oak became the world’s first true luxury sports watch, originally crafted exclusively in stainless steel. It marked a radical departure from the conventions of the era, which favored traditional gold dress watches. Its bold, angular design introduced a distinctive octagonal bezel inspired by a ship’s porthole, secured with exposed hexagonal screws, an integrated bracelet, and the now-iconic ‘Tapisserie’ dial, features that remain defining hallmarks of the collection.
The launch of the Royal Oak coincided with the height of the Quartz Crisis, a period when Swiss watchmaking was under immense pressure from the influx of inexpensive, mass-produced quartz watches. Many historic maisons were forced to shut their doors. Audemars Piguet, however, made a daring bet: positioning the Royal Oak not merely as a watch, but as a provocative statement, priced even higher than many gold watches of the time, despite being made of steel. Initially met with skepticism, its avant-garde design and audacious pricing eventually found favor among forward-thinking collectors and tastemakers, ultimately establishing an entirely new genre: the luxury sports watch.
From its inception, the Royal Oak evolved rapidly, giving rise to a wide range of variations. A significant turning point came in 1983, when complications were first introduced to the collection, initially in a 36mm mid-size case, developed in response to growing demand for a more compact alternative to the original ‘Jumbo.’ Ten years later, in 1993, Audemars Piguet unveiled the Royal Oak Dual Time, maintaining the same mid-size proportion.
Its dual time-zone function, based on Audemars Piguet’s own patent, CH673196A, allows the wearer to track a second time zone via the small 12-hour subdial at 6 o’clock, adjusted easily through the crown. Additional complications include a power reserve indicator at the top left and a pointer date display on the opposite side.
Offered in good condition, this example of reference 25730ST was originally sold in 2002 in Northern Italy. It was born with a white dial, still included in the full set, but was later fitted, at the original owner's request, with a black dial featuring silver print, as currently mounted. This offers the next caretaker both aesthetic options and the flexibility to switch between dials, while also adding a valuable original component to the set.
